Music Appreciation Classes

Baroque Era Music
(Fall, 5 sessions long)



This class is meant to give students a fun, well-rounded understanding of baroque music and to see how Western music developed during this time.  We will meet several talented and well-known composers of the day, listen to their music, and hear about the instruments and styles of that period.

Classical Era Music
(Fall, 5 sessions long)



This class is meant to give students a fun, well-rounded understanding of Classical music and to see how Western music developed during this time.  We will meet several talented and well-known composers of the day, listen to their music, and hear about the influences and styles of this period. 







Instruments & the Orchestra
(Spring, 5 sessions long)



Each class will explore different types of instruments and how they function. We will study the four families of an orchestra and we will learn all sorts of interesting facts. For instance, what does a cantrabassoon look like, what does timbre mean, and what makes one instrument sound different than another?







Hymns of Faith
(Spring, 4 sessions long)



Traditional hymns are a huge part of Christian heritage.  Therefore, it is important to know the stories behind these beloved songs.   In class we will explore who wrote the poem, what their life was like, what inspired them to pen the words and when it was put to music.  








American Patriotic Music
(Summer, 4 sessions long)



This class teaches the stories behind some of America’s best-known patriotic songs.  You will learn about the setting the song was written in, who wrote the song, why they wrote the song and how it became so popular.  









Jazz Music: An Introduction
(Summer, 5 sessions long)



Do you like jazz or do you want to learn more about what jazz is all about and how it began?  If so, come explore, listen and learn what jazz is, how jazz was born in America, and about some of the great jazz musicians.
